Snare Drum
I completed this as a personal creative project at the Creative Media Center, described in my About section. I constructed the drum using a 5.5” x 14” 6 ply walnut shell, which I finished with a few coats of teak oil. I prepared the shell with multiple rounds of sanding, a little bit of water to open the grain, and a very small amount of shellac, after which I applied the finishing oil. To minimize imperfections and ensure a uniform shell, I made sure to thoroughly clean and lightly sand/scuff to smooth the shell in between each step.
For the hardware installation, I carefully measured and marked the both the center and mounting hole locations for each lug and for the Ludwig P88AC throw off and P35 butt plate. I then slowly drilled all of the holes in multiple rounds of increasing drill bit size to prevent splitting.
Finally, I began the assembly process by cleaning the drum to remove any dust produced by the drilling. I finished the process by placing the two heads (Evans G12 Snare Batter and Evans Snare Side 300 drumheads), triple flange hoops, the tension rods, and Evans PureSound Custom Pro Brass Snare Wire.
