JHUSOM26 (JHU Mechanical Engineering Senior Design)

My MechE Senior Design Project for the 2025-26 year tasks our team (team members: Aidan Montano, Cyrus Levy, Eva Loftus, Kennedi Woods) with developing a novel microneedle-based endoscopic delivery device to enable minimally invasive endoluminal gastric remodeling, reducing stomach volume in patients with obesity and diabetes.

The project builds on the benefits of minimally invasive surgery (including faster recovery times and fewer complications) to support our in-development method for delivering drugs to a patient’s stomach using a standard endoscope. Our endoscopic needle array will allow injection of a given stomach area more efficiently than a single needle. The device, which will specifically deliver a sustained-release bleomycin microparticle formulation into the submucosal layer of the gastric wall, will achieve similar effects to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), reducing stomach volume but without surgery.
